A QUESTION (ABOUT THANK YOU SIGNS, POLICE AND ELECTIONS)

For all the Trump enthusiasts, who wave their signs with such resolve,

As if the more signs that they wave, the more the problems they will solve,

I ask this question for myself, and no one else I dare involve,

Why now?

They haven’t murdered anyone, but that’s no reason for a cheer,

No officer’s Facebook post is found, containing any racial smear,

They treat their business workmanlike, but suddenly these signs appear,

Why now?

No protest marches held downtown, have left the city in a mess,

No flying bullets from right wing nuts, have taxed police beyond excess,

They do their jobs like all of us, I’m at a loss, I must confess,

Why now?

They’re under pressure there’s s no doubt, the fault of much brutality,

And yes our force is well behaved, of that I wouldn’t disagree,

But racial strife across our land leads one to question, honestly,

Why now?

An individual with tact might notice racial strife is roiling,

Deeply buried hurt and pain, long festering, now in summer broiling,

If discretion’s the better part of valor, one question leaves my blood a-boiling

Why now?

They couldn’t wait a few short months, ‘til racial tensions simmer down?

Instead of stoking conflict in our laid back and idyllic town?

If spite and hate is not their goal, what fuels their fear of Black and Brown?

Why now?

Now I suspect there’s subterfuge, a sly riposte to Black Lives Matter,

These slippery, fear-filled hypocrites, when questioned would, like insects scatter,

They can’t tell truth, their only weapon, distracting us with mindless chatter,

Why now?

‘Twas Nixon played the race card back in ’68, Hail

Law and Order!

The acolytes of Trump reply “Let’s do it again, and Close the Border!”

Like a dreary song we’ve heard before, preserved on someone’s tape recorder

I’m just beginning to understand Why now?

The answer to this question’s simple, it really only does require,

A short peruse of history, the way that madmen stoke a fire,

Trump’s hate for Blacks and Browns means votes, and four more years for that born liar,

I think I finally understand Why now?
